“Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death.” The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is the most profound and symbolic work that I’ve ever read. It’s about how Katniss, main character, survive in the Hunger Games. The Games is held by the Capitol which is harsh and cruel and the Capitol keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. This book is the first series of the Hunger Games, followed by Catching Fire, so you should read this book for the start of the Hunger Games. In this book, there are a lot of scenes written to make readers feel sad, love or mystery, but tense scenes are written particularly well. Of course, the Games which tributes participate in is the game to choose a victor, but what s worse, the Games is controlled by the Capitol, so occasionally the Capitol rigs situation in the Games and makes the tributes get in danger. This book demonstrates that situation in perspective of Katniss(The first person view), in which readers can empathize for situation and think like becoming one of the characters. The most impressive and favorite character in this book is Peeta. Of course, there is more weight for Katniss in the book, but the reason why Peeta is most impressed is because he sacrifices everything for Katniss. While only one person can survive in the Games and each other is busy trying to kill each other, Peeta sacrifices himself for Katniss, because he loves Katniss, without considering his own death. Also, although she is not as impressive as Peeta, another character that still reminds me of is Rue, a girl from District 11. If the relationship between Peeta and Katniss is a romance, then the relationship between Rue and Katniss is an alliance, albeit from different districts. Rue is truly a buttress to Katniss by overcoming hardships and adversities with Katniss. It s easy to see what Katniss does for Rue when she dies. When it comes to the alliance, Rue helps Katniss in the field of herbs, regardless of the purpose of the Games. She treats Katniss when she gets hurt in a fight with the participants and gives her information such as which herbs are good and which ones shouldn t be taken during the Hunger Games that the Capitol created. Despite having to win the game herself, I was impressed by Rue who helped Katniss in her whole heart. I watched her die. I cried, too. There are many tense scenes, but this book, which can see romance scenes like this, seems to keep readers reading the book with stories, diction, story development and composition that they never get tired of.The novel focuses more on how Katniss survives and on thinking about participants from other areas than on killing them. Even if this book doesn t focus on killing, however, since Hunger Games, which makes tributes kill the other game tributes, is the main subject in the book, there are many scenes of each other killing, and it is very specific in the way in which the scenes are described. Therefore, when I read it, the very cruel scenes, such as cruel murder scenes and the pain of injuries caused by fights with other participants, were so well reminiscent that it was hard to read, and there were many scary scenes. Also, in the book, the Capitol, watching the children kill each other, want more dramatic moments and provocative scenes to cheer and give the audiences including the Gamemakers and all the districts something to see. It was so cruel in other ways. It s not the blood. It is cruel to be revealing too well the absurd and immoral society of the Capitol. These are the missing points of the book.I would like to recommend this book to people who like thrillers and suspense, or who are interested in social issues and criticism.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlaying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one girl and one boy between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has also resolved to outwit the creators of the games. To do that she will have to be the last person standing at the end of the deadly ordeal, and that will take every ounce of strength and cunning she has.
